OaSIS Deployment Log Feb/March 1995 Deployment of OASIS Moorings M1 and M2 Please note all changes to the moorings, the OASIS controller, or any equipment that resides on M1 or M2 in this log. Sign and date your entry. The initials "rah" are for Robert A. Herlien. 21feb95 peti Recovered both moorings; end previous deployment. 27feb95 rah DEPLOYED M2 mooring, OASIS software revision 3.0 CTD #1169. Satlantic #006. 27feb95 peti---m2 As deployed on m2: tr87 fl41 ctd1169 Satlantic TSRB sn 006 All antifouling rings were painted with OMP prior to deployment; all sensors except Satlantic were copper painted with the good stuff; Satl. was not painted but does have a ring. Deployed a barnacle array. 16mar95 peti---m1 DEPLOYED MOORING. Ctd099, tr451, fl79, sat012, barnacle array on elevator; prr620 sn 9619 on tower in air; prr 9604 at 10 m; prr 9605 at 20 m. 29mar95 peti---m1 Chris O'Brien tried to fix his satellite uplink; failed; I believe he will try again 3/31. Gernot fixed his pC02 sensor; still giving odd data; I believe he will also try again 3/31. I did not go on either mooring this day. 03apr95 peti---m1 On Martin. Chris O'Niel tried again to fix satellite uplink. Worked? I swapped satlantic 011 in and Satlantic 012 out. Also changed barnacle plates; 21 recruits. 22apr95 peti---m1 On Sur on Coop95. Swapin fl218, tr277, barnacle plates; recover tr451, fl79. Also did some pco2 work on this day and a subsequent day --- gernot. No ctd or satlantic swapout. 22apr95 peti---m2 On Sur on Coop95, rough. LOTS corrosion on aluminum elevator post in center!!!! Swapin fl79 (cleaned from m1 earlier in d ay), tr485. Recover fl41, tr87. No ctd swapout. Changed barnacle plates. No Satlantic swapout (big unit); it was covered with barnies, even on tbt around window; cleaned. Barnacle plates had few. Very worrisome; plates shouldve been covered. 13jun95 peti---m1 Menzies, divers and kelly tried swap PRR's . Failed. Did remove a ?10 m nitrate sensor. 14jun95 peti---m1 On Lobos ctdrun. Swapped all ctd sensors. Also Gernot worked on his pc02 sensor. Installed ctd 1170, trans87 fl41, sat012. Removed ctd 099, tr277, fl218, sat011. Also swapped barnacle plates; alot recruits. Sensors badly fouled too. 14jun95 peti---m2 Swapped all ctd sensors; cleaned satlantic; removed 0m no3 sensor; gernot also worked on pc02 sensor. Removed barnacle plates but did not have plates to reinstall; moderately heavy fouling. Elevator is corroding apart. Aluminum sleeve which surrounds the elevator shaft (fiberglass) is welded to 2 stainless collars to which are welded stainless tubes for sensor racks. The aluminum sleeve has lost big pieces at bottom, is oxidized right thru, and has big cracks near the top where the winch cable attaches. We moved winch cable down around 2 sensor tubes. Installed ctd868, tr451, fl300. Fl 300 is apparently not working. Removed ctd 1169, tr485, fl79. Now appears if fl300 is working. Hm...not sure. Also, tr fl data are reversed; is ctd868 wired backwards, or have I wired the sensors backwards? Had bob fix in software. Fl 300 is working, I think, but is less sensitive. Will open and raise sensitivity, bench test, and try again. 21jun95 peti---m1 Kelley and divers, then Tim on Martin. Finished installing 10m (9626 tag 2/3) and 20 m prrs (9609 tag 4/5). Did Menzies-type float test of 3 prrs. Did prr cast next to m1. Removed 0 m nitrate sensor. No ctd or barnacle swapout. 28jun95 peti---m2 On Lobos; flat calm. Kelley swapped fl300 out and Installed fluor 79. This is operating at higher sensitivity and does not cause ctd data dropouts. Also installed barnacle plates (none to remove). Elevator corrosion apparently worse. 12jul95 peti---m2 On Lobos. Removed fluor79, tr451, barnacle plates. Installed tr485, fl218, nitrate sensor, b-plates. Not much new fouling; elevator looked ok; cleaned most all barnacles. 12jul95 peti---m1 On Lobos; choppy. Gernot worked on pco2 sensor; new equilibrator. Kelley swapped satlantics. Did not swap b-plates; dropped replacement array to deep. Removed satl 012; depl satl011. 14jul95 peti---m2 note We have had spikes in cond/sal data since ctd868 swapped in. All its dependant sensors have since been swapped, and still spikes. Problem apparently with ctd or oasis cable. 26jul95 peti---m1 On Lobos; some chop. Deployed ctd1169, fl79, tr451, sat012, b-plates, new equilibrator for Gernot. Recovered ctd1170, fl41, tr87, sat011, b-plates, old equilibrator. Substantial barnacle recruitment and growth. Cable to satlantics is cracked by sun thru to wires. All else seemed ok. 27jul95 peti---m1 Hans went with divers on martin to install nitrate sensors; not sure details. 28jul95 peti---m1 note Notice that salinity vals from ctd1170 seem to be somewhat higher than those from 1169 just following swapout. 09aug95 peti---m2 On Lobos; 22195. Installed fl41, tr87; recovered fl218, tr485. Installed 0 m nitrate sensor but found the pins on connector on calbe to oasis can badly corroded and one pin missing. So did not deploy nitrate sensor. A few barnies on barnie plates; swapped. Cage so badly corroded now it is rotating freely with the waves. So cabletied it to the SST cable. 16aug95 kemi rec'd s/n 9604 & 9605 from D. Menzies following calibration. S/ N 9604 was not tagged (should be 2,3). S/N 9605 tagged 4,5. 17aug95 kemi---m1 dive trip at M1: deployed s/n 9604 at 10m and 9605 at 20m; recovered s/n 9626 from 10m and s/n 9609 from 20m. s/n 9609 was missing the pig-tail cable and the bulkhead connector was damaged due to diver operations. S/N 9626 & 9609 were taken back to UCSB with D. Menzies for repair and calibration. 22aug95 peti --- antifouling note All antifouling tr and fl rings painted with clear tbt. 23aug95 peti---m1 On Lobos. Broke pc02 connectors on tube to equilibrator. Install ctd099, tr485, fl218, satl011. Recovered ctd1169, tr451, fl79, satl012. Swapped barnie plates; not much fouling. 28aug95 peti---m1 trans note Swapin tr485 produced lower voltages immed after swapout than did swapout tr451. Is this because of lower voltage output (ie, in air)? tr485 air is 3.74 V tr451 air is 4.39 Thus an air diff in correct direction of .65 V; this probably explains it. 13sep95 peti---m2 On lobos. Swapin ctd1169, tr451, fl218 (unit taken off m1 earlier on same day by dive crew on Kahuna). Swapout ctd868, tr87, fl41. Also swapped barnie plates. Not much new recruitment but ctd868 which had been out for several mos was covered with big ones. Tr had stopped working. This due to the y-cable connector on top being bent over and a pin broken off in the female connector. Replaced y-cable with one I salvaged in lab; hope it lasts; have ordered new ones. Spikes we had been having in conductivity data also fixed by this; not sure if it was the y-cable or the ctd. Guess this caused by sea lion inside donut. 13sep95 peti---m1 On Kahuna; divers; kelly and francisco and others; I was not there. Removed organochlorine collectors. Deployed Sat012, fl79, tr277; recovered fl218, tr485, sat011. Also swapped barnie plates; not much recruitment. No ctd swap. Gernot repaired pco2 sensor. Divers swapped PRR's, as follows: Recovered pair #1; 9604 from 10m, 9605 from 20m Deployed pair #2; 9626 at 10m, 9609 at 20m These units have to be at these depths as the 10 m ones are tags 2,3 and 20 m ones are 4,5. Surface unit, which is not swapped and is now 9619, has tags 0,1 27sep95 peti---m2 On Lobos. Swapin fl41, tr485. Recover fl218, tr451. Gernot installed pco2 sensor; I swapped barnie plates too; almost no recruitment. 10oct95 peti---m1 On Martin, with divers. Swapin PRR's 9604 (10m), 9605 20m); remove 9626 (10m), 9609 (20m). Good amt green scum on upwindows; no barnie fouling; baby cream didnt work for scum, which probably ruined abs vals of data. Couldnt get equip for array intercalib or prr profiles to work, so didnt do any. 11oct95 peti---m1 On Lobos. Depl fl 218, tr 451; recov fl 79, tr 277. Left these in shop with buga for antifoul sleeves. Also Depl sat011, recov 012. Also swap barnie plates; not much recruit, but spent alot time removing big ones from adcp, etc. 25oct95 peti---m2 On Lobos. Depl Fl79, Tr277; recov Fl41, Tr485. Satl TSRB 006 had quit working; removed it but lacked a dummy for OASIS can so left the cable there with gloves over connector. Repl barnie plates. 08nov95 kemi---m1 on Martin, PRR dive trip, kemi and chfr. Deployed: ctd 868, fl 41, tr 485, Sat 012. Recovered: ctd 99, fl 218, tr 451, Sat 011. No barnacle plates swapped. Divers recovered: PRR 9604 and 9605 from 10m and 20m. Divers deployed: PRR 9626 and 9609 at 10m and 20m. 15nov95 peti---m2 On lobos ctd run 31995. Deployed ctd1170, tr 451, fl 218. Recov ctd 1169, tr 277, fl 79. Removed satl cable; it had been chaffed thru near waterline. Repl barnie plates; quite a few cyprids. 6dec95 peti---m1 On lobos 34095. Main mission was to get oasis cans working again; both had quit. Gary did hard reset; worked for a While, then I think hebo fixed something else over the radio. Recovered tr485, fl41, ctd868, sat012. Deployed tr 277, fl79, ctd1169, sat011. Cable on adcp was badly bent over; not sure if sea lion or bridle on elevator the cause. Connector on satlantic012 was loose where threads into body; I tightened it in lab; seems ok. Swapped barnie plates; some large ones; lots caprellids. 20dec95 peti---m1 On Martin with kime and divers. Divers swapped subsurface prr's; not sure which. repl adcp cable. Deployed tr 485, fl41, sat012. Recovered Sat011, tr277, fl79. Noted cable from satl to surface prr is badly sun-cracked. Bridle to lift elevator needs lengthening; at present it pinches the adcp cable a little, during raising and lowereing. It needs an >8" Y , and new eyes and nylocks. A new assembly which we can swap. 03jan96 peti---m2 On 00396 ctdrun. Deployed ctd868, tr277, fl79. Recovered ctd1170, tr451, 218. Swapped barnie plates; LOTS of ca 20 mm ones on cage and sensors. Moved SST pod over onto cage, as its mounting onm center column of cage had corroded away. Had trouble raising elevator, I guess because barnies were growing on center column and blocking cage. Gernot's pco2 tubes to hoffman box seem loose; one came out but we replugged it; this design poor --- bery prone to being bumped and not very strong. 31jan96 kemi---M1 03196 CTD cruise deployed ctd 099, fl 218, Tr 87 recovered ctd 1169, fl 41, Tr 485 07feb96 kemi---M1 PRR dive on Martin deployed ctd 1169, Fl 41, Tr 485 and new ftctd cable recovered ctd 099, fl 218, Tr 87 ctd099 had a smashed 6-pin connector & cable disconnected too rough for divers to swap prr's 14feb96 kemi---CTD cruise 04596 on Pt. Lobos M1 deployed ctd 099 recovered ctd 1169 there were about 4 sea lions on M1 and also INSIDE the hole - maybe we need a "cattle gate" type door across the tower opening M2 deployed Fl 218, Tr 451 recovered Fl 79, Tr 277 the collar at top of the elevator has corroded away, had to use a block & pulley to help bring it up. 08mar96 kemi---PRR dive on Martin with Gernot M1 deployed Tr 87, Fl 79 recovered Tr 485, Fl 41 recovered surface NO3 and logger, and pCO2 system Divers recovered 10m NO3 and swapped prr's deployed 9626 at 10m and 9609 at 20m recover 9604 at 10m and 9605 at 20m 13mar96 kemi---CTD cruise 07396 on Lobos no mooring maintenance work done - too rough to get on M1 and did not go out to M2. CTD casts at C1 and M1. Problems with ctd on first cast - was giving very bad numbers for temp (& S%). Corrected itself after going down to 200m. Call Seabird! 22mar96 peti---LOG and mooring use log jive for period of P15S; 25mar96 peti---fluor 79 on m1 producing low vals; need to check. 19apr96 peti---m1 On ridgeway. Swapin ctd1169 fluor41 trans277 satl012 Recover ctd099 fluor79 tr87 satl011 and barnie plates. Substantial swell but nice morning. Incredible barnies on elevator due to no cleaning or lots of growth. 24apr96 peti---m2 On Lobos Swapin ctd099 fluor300 tr485 Recover ctd868 fluor218 trans451 and barnie plates. Strong swell but glassy. Elevator in bad shape; had difficulty raising and lowering it. Massive barnie growth; some over a ft long. 1May96 peti---m1 On Martin Visited m1 on PRR dive trip to see why trans data so spiky. Looked like barnacles on thermistor cable grown so big they can occlude light path. Too deep for me to clean off. Had divers do it. Will see if worked. Have same problem on M2. Did not change trans. Also swapped in satl 011 and recovered satl 012 so that Mike could measure the tbt ring on 012 (011 does not have one). kemi- Divers swapped out the PRR's: deploy 9604 at 10m and 9605 at 20m recover 9626 at 10m and 9609 at 20m Divers also reported a bad connector (one of the U/W mateable pins was very floppy) at the 10m PRR. PRR cast and surface chl collected at M1. 15May96 peti---m2 On lobos Depl ctd1170 tr87 fl218 Recov ctd099 (has been reading high cond) tr485 fl300 Amazing amounts barnies on bridle; cage now sprung so its hard to put mounts on. 16May96 peti Bob informs me that 1170 not working. 29may96 peti Both m2 and m2 moorings recovered. M1, recovered: ctd1169 tr277 satl011 fl41 m2, recovered: ctd1170 tr87 fluor218 ***************** END OF DEPLOYMENT ************* NOTES ON RECOVERY TECHNIQUE: 1. get 1 snap hook tag on donut d-ring while mooring passes along stbd side of ship. 2. pull mooring around to stern by hand. 3. get another snap hook tag on tower to guide as it comes in thru a-frame; this where we bust antennas, wind gagues, etc. In '96 we did not use this tag; tags on donut not sufficient while crane working. 4. get crane hook on donut d-ring; we tried trawl winch in '96 and did not work. 5. lift mooring; guide aboard with tower tag, tower forward. 6. tie mooring down on fantail; stopper chain with trawl cable; cut chain. 7. Pull chain up thru a-frame shiv while separating therm-cable on fantail; do this until you can break the therm-cable at first pod (in a cage). Tie cage. 8. Move mooring to side; tie down. 9. Bring mooring tether and therm-chain aboard. 10. After operation will need to spool off trawl winch onto spooler, if doing another mooring that day.
