OASIS Deployment Log October, November 1993 Deployment of OASIS Moorings M1 and M2 Please note all changes to the moorings, the OASIS controller, or any equipment that resides on M1 or M2 in this log. Sign and date your entry. The initials "rah" are for Robert A. Herlien. 14oct93 rah Deployed OASIS revision 2.3 on M2 mooring, recovered M1 Logged onto M2 by radio and started CTD sampling 27oct93 rah Recovered CTD 099, deployed CTD 868 on M2. Recovered barnacle array. Considerable recruitment. 04nov93 rah Deployed OASIS revision 2.4 on M1 mooring Logged onto M1A and M1B, stopped pCO2 and Nitrate sampling Initial configuration: CTD 1170 10 meter CTD 099 surface MER spectro 8708 10m MER spectro 8720 PAR #1 4394 PAR #2 4393 Satlantic spectros #11 (Bank B), #12 (Bank C) Surface PRR-600 spectro 9609, Address tags 0, 1 10 meter PRR-600 spectro 9604, Address tags 2, 3 20 meter PRR-600 spectro 9605, Address tags 4, 5 24nov93 peti---m1 Visited M1 and inspected. All appears fine. Little/no barnacle fouling on my arrays or elsewhere. m2 from the ship looked fine too. 29nov93 todd---m1 Noticed that adcp is not getting low voltage power from oasis. Suspect blown fuse in oasis can. Will try moving adcp connector to a different oasis port next visit. 15dec93 rah, m2 M2 CTD full. Recovered missing 56 records from M2 CTD and restarted CTD logging. Moved ADCP from 1D to 1E (pCO2 port) -- suspect blown fuse on 1D. Changed ADCP parameters to match. 15dec93 peti---m1 Went on m1, pulled 3 barnacle arrays and a plate, switched adcp and pc02 power, inspected. A few barnacles since last time, but on the whole, little fouling. Everything remarkably clean. 15Dec93 todd---m1 ADCP v1 voltage back up to 12.5 volts after the switch from 1D to 1E was made. 23Dec93 chfr-m1b Replaced ctd 10m cable on 22Dec93 and deployed acoustic modem topside and hydrophone. Recovered old 10 m spectro. Dummied of top and bottom of old cables. Dumped 10 m CTD data on 23Dec93 and restarted instrument. Preliminary look at the data suggests that 10 m spectro may have been causing oscillation in CTD. 29dec93 peti---m2 Recovered fluor 79 and trans 485---badly fouled with barnacles---deployed fluor 41 and trans 87 as back from Galapagos. Neither apparently works, damn it. Recovered small barnacle plate and deployed 1 array; fouling over last month not too bad; sensors mostly fouled by growth of recruits from earlier. 29dec93 peti---m1 Went on m1. Recovered barnacle array and replaced with another. Significant barnacle fouling since last visit. No swapout of sensors. Franc checked out a connection to ?Satlantic; not sure what he did. 04Jan94 todd---m1 ADCP v1 voltage dropped to 7.0 volts 02Jan94 09:45 GMT. 13jan94 peti---m1 On Ricketts. Repl trans 277 with 485. Repl fluor 218 with 79. Moderate/little barnacle fouling. Repl ADCP cable (v1 voltage went back up to 12 volts). Noticed imperfectly repaired crack in female connector on top of ADCP. Repl OASIS can m1a; installed can #2 (removed can #??; no number on top). Some trouble connecting with m1a; incorrect packet address. Repl barnacle array with another. Was on mooring over 2 hrs. 26jan94 peti---m2 Swapout ctd 868, tr 87, fl 41. Swapin ctd 1169, tr 277, fl 218. Swapout %t and fl had early produced LOW voltages, and ctd late ran out of batteries. Changed ctd port on OASIS from 1b to 1d. Also repl all ctd cabling. Swapped 1 barnacle array; little new fouling. Installed NO3 sensor; OASIS port 1e. 3feb94 peti---m1 On Ridgeway. Swapout of oasis cans at location m1a. Remove mbari Satatlantic. Swap barnacle array. All looked fine. 4mar94 peti---m1 On Ridgeway. Clean all sensors on elevator. Swapout barnacle array only; no other senosrs. Moderate/little barnacle recruitment, but lots of growth. Fluorometer voltage dropped nicely, after cleaning. 9mar94 peti---m2 Cleaned all senors and cage. Moderate barnacle fouling. Swappin ctd868, fluor41; swapout ctd1169, fluor218; cleaned the trans. Barnacles were in paths of both fluor and trans. Also tie-wrapped 2 very moribund starfish to cage. We'll see. 23mar94 peti---m1 Swapped in ctd 1169 and fluor 218. Swapout ctd1170 and fl 79. Dropped the swapout barnacle array to the deep; installed a new one. Not much new barnacle recruitment, just growth, but the transmissometer did have barnacles in the light path. 27apr94 peti---m1 Drove by m1 in 12' seas. Seemed ok. 28apr94 peti---m1 On ridgeway. Swapped in tr 87, fl 79; swappedout tr 485 fl 218. Did some cleaning, but adcp in particular badlyl fouled. Not much barnacle recruit; plenty growth. Noticed mooring listing. Swapped barnacle plates. 29apr94 peti---m1 On Ricketts with divers. Found mooring moored by thermistor chain only. Broken top shackle. Divers replaced, with tremendous effort, in 15-20 kn NW wind with twisting mooring and 4' chop. They also removed the following sensors from 10 m cage: ctd 099 fl 219 tr 451 prr 9604 Left prr on 20 m cage. Above sensors prepped for planned redeployment 5/3/94. Mooring not listing after repair. 3may94 peti---m1 Sacamoto on Ricketts with divers. Recovered PRR 9605 from 20 m cage. Pretty decent shape. They also installed nitrate sensor on 10 m cage, and did acoustic modem work (not sure if installed). 25may94 chfr--m1 CTD on M1a full. One day of data lost. Restarted without downloading. 8Jun94 peti---m1 On lobos ctd cruise. Swapout ctd1169, fl79, tr87, Satatlantic 011, barnacle plates. Swapin ctd099, fl219, tr451, Satatlantic012, b-plates. Put swapin Satat. in original position; not where 011 had been. Dummied that off and tied above waterline. Did extensive cleaning of badly fouled adcp. Little barnacle recruitment; lots of growth. 10jun94 peti---m2 On Ridgeway with etch and teto. Reset oasis can 2X, as oasis was stuck and needed rebooting. This worked. Swedge-eye on stainless cable bridle to cage broken. I clipped nylon rope directly to cage by crawling down inside and raised cage. Extensive barnacle fouling (mostly big ones). Nitrate sensor not really visible, except where 1 big starfish had kept it clean. Starfish did little/no cleaning on copper paint. Moved it over near transm. I did a moderate cleaning job on fl and tr, but boys wanted to go home so quit there. As this was a spur-of-moment trip, had no swapout gear there. Left barnacle plates on. Winch for cage stiff with corrosion; take some lube next time. 20jul94 peti---m2 On Lobos. Etch and Kim dove on mooring to check tether shackle. It was fine. Nitrate analyzer had broken off welds on cage wing --- dangling. Removed it. It weighed ca 50 lb. Fluorometer hanging by its electrical cord. Still functioning. Swapped all ctd sensors and barnacle plates. Starfish gone. Probably the NO3 sensor knocked off the fluorometer. Swapin instr were ctd1169, fluor79, tr87. Swapout instr were ctd 868, fluor41, tr277. Fluor41 gave low values in lab crude calibrations; this is unit refurbished early in year; will avoid its use for rest of this deployment. 20jul94 peti---m1 Also went to m1. Etch removed alan bat box and antenna. I measured some elevator stuff for Gernot. All looked ok. No recruit barnies on plates. Did not swap. 11aug94 peti---m1 Swapin ctd868, fl218, tr485; swapout ctd99, fl219, tr451. No barnacle fouling; lots bryozoans and caprellids. Swapout barnie plates. Nothing else of note. 24aug94 peti---m2---NOTE ADDED 1/96 Apparently a swapout never logged here, but I found these records in MOoring Sensor Use Log. These sensors swapped in: 24aug94 94 236 m2 0m ctd099 24aug94 94 236 m2 0 fluor219 24aug94 94 236 m2 0 trans451 And these swapped out: ctd1169 fluor79 trans87 7sep94 peti---m1 Swapin tr87, fl79; swapout tr485, fl218. Swapin Satlantic011; swapout Satlantic 012. Connected 011 to old/original 011 cable, so data will continue to come in as before. No barnacle fouling; lots caprellids over everything. ALAN tube on mooring; huge. Gary repl one oasis antenna, that was sending weakly. Seemed to work. BobH along. 28sep94 peti---m1 Swap oasis can in with optical and power isolators for ctd. Thurmond. Swap out OASIS #1, swap in OASIS #2. Swapin ctd1170, fl218, tr277; swapout ctd868, tr87, fl79. Not any barnacle fouling; still lots caprellids. Flat calm. 28sep94 peti---m2 Swapin ctd1169, tr485, fl41. Swapout ctd099, tr451, fl219. HOWEVER, I dropped fl219 to the deep. Little/no Barnacle fouling; choppy. 19oct94 peti---m2 On lobos with Thurmond. M2 had been dead. Replaced oasis--battery cable with spliced cable from ctd. Seemed to work. Installed tr451, fl79 Swapout tr485, fl1169. Did not swap ctd's because had no way to get new unit logging. Left 1169 in place but not connected to oasis; hopefully logging. 19oct94 peti---m1 With Thurmond. Installed hydrophone off side of buoy for the day. Removed can m1b, which was dead. 20oct94 peti---m2 On Ricketts with Tracy. Reset can on m2; worked. Installed ctd868 with new ctd cable. Worked. 21nov94 peti---m1 On Sanctuary Boat with Todd and Gerry. Removed adcp. Ralphed. Swapped in ctd1169, fl41, tr87. Swapped out ctd1170, fl218, tr277. Ralphed. Had trouble with elevator not wanting nto go down w/out adcp; top pvc drossbar got out of kilter and cockeyed; had to pound/tap down. Spent 2 hrs on mooring in choppy weather. Swapped barnacle array too. Not much fouling since last. 30nov94 peti---m2 swapin ctd1170, tr277, fl218. Swapout ctd868, tr541, fl97. Also barnacle plates. No new fouling. 30nov94 peti---m1 Took measurements of batt box bar spacings for shop. 21dec94 peti---m1 Intended to swapout ctd sensors, but could not get elevator up. Reefed on it with winch and bent top eye on elevator, so stopped, as mooring producing good data now anyway and is scheduled for pullout in about in month anyway. Problem is that elevator is cockeyed on support poles; got that way during adcp removal; perhaps adcp was holding it square; not sure. mON 19jan95 peti---m2 On grunt 5. No ctd swap. Recover tr277, fl218; deploy tr451, fl79. Also swap barnacle plates; little barnacle fouling. 19jan95 peti---m1 On grunt 5. No ctd swap. Recover tr87, fl41; deploy tr485, new fluor300. Also swapped barnacle plates, but not Satlantic. Got elevator up by attaching winch cable right side of bridle only; it came up fine. Went down with all m y weight on it. 25jan95 peti---m1 Swap out Satlantic 011, fluor 300; deploy Sat012, Deploy fluor41: fluor 300 not working. Also repl Y-cable tfrom ctd to tr and fl. 8feb95 peti ---m2 Swapped-out ctd 1170; installed ctd 099. Changed barnacle plates. On Lobos; late cruise. 09feb95 peti---m1 On Martin. Swapped out tr485; installed tr87. Taped up Satlantic 012 top prevent corrosion like that which damaged 011. Not much sign corrosion on this one, which has been out since jan25. 21feb95 peti---m2 On Sur. Recovered m2. Fewer barnacles that previous years. One shackle essentially stripped, apparently due to galvanic action. Recovered elevator sensors ctd 099, fl79, tr451. Red (cheaper) copper paint mostly gone off bottom float. 21feb95 peti---m1 Also recovered m1. Remarkably few barnacles. Lauren's brown copper paint under float still intact. Shackles at bottom bridle bad shape; I did not examine. Recovered elevator sensors ctd1169, fl41, tr87, Satlantic ?? **** END OF DEPLOYMENT ****
